In the early days of his pastoral ministry, Canadian television host Mike Sherbino had the opportunity to conduct chapel services in Toronto’s infamous Don Jail where he witnessed the daunting sense of heaviness that pervaded the prison. He reflected that, “The main thing missing from the room was hope.” In the midst of that hopelessness, Sherbino was able to share the Good News of the Gospel with those in prison. This interest in sharing the hope of Jesus with those in prison prompted him to connect with Corley for a conversation about Prison Fellowship International’s (PFI’s) role in the Christian prison ministry space.
Throughout their conversation, Corley shared an overview of PFI’s history and how they have grown into the largest faith-based organization in the criminal justice field, currently operating in 123 countries. As he puts it, “We are not the only pony in town, as it were, but we do have a large footprint.” He also shared about PFI’s approach, one that is holistic in its application to reach not only prisoners, but also their families and the victims of crime.
“Prison Fellowship International’s work is about bringing hope to those who find themselves in hopeless situations and reminding them that they are not alone.”
They also discussed PFI’s founder, Chuck Colson, who started the organization in 1976. Colson was a man who was changed by the power of the Gospel during his own incarceration for Watergate-related charges. Colson’s genuine experience, born out of his time in prison, changed his life in very profound ways and became a passion for the rest of his life. This passion has been manifested in the work of Prison Fellowship International across the globe for more than 40 years.
“God has a special place in his heart for the incarcerated, the marginalized, the weak, the poor.”
– Chuck Colson
The Gospel is a message of hope that has the power to transform even the most broken of lives. This is why it’s so important to share the Gospel with those around us, including those in the most hopeless situations. Through their own platforms, Mike and Andy are both working to share the message of the Gospel and shine a light in the darkness because no matter what someone’s circumstances may be, God has a plan of restoration for each of us.
