Restoring Hope Through Education in Zimbabwe

Back-To-School Events Bring Hope In Zimbabwe

The PromisePath program has made a meaningful impact in Zimbabwe by restoring dignity, rebuilding trust and addressing the deep emotional and social wounds left by incarceration. Through holistic interventions, Prison Fellowship Zimbabwe has reached both incarcerated parents and their families, ensuring that children receive educational support, families are strengthened and parents behind bars are reintegrated with renewed faith and purpose.

One of the program’s most successful initiatives has been the Back-to-School program, which is paired with mentoring and counseling sessions for both children and parents. Prison Fellowship Zimbabwe successfully conducted two recent Back-to-School events. Both were strategically planned to reach children and families in accessible locations. This effort not only meets the immediate educational needs of vulnerable children but also fosters resilience, reduces stigma and promotes healing within families.

Prior to the events, the National Ministry carried out a needs assessment to identify the children most in need of assistance. A total of 270 children attended the two events. The impact has been profound. Children are regaining confidence in school, caregivers are empowered to provide better support and incarcerated parents are rebuilding stronger bonds with their families.

The events were highly collaborative, with active participation from board members, the Executive Director, program staff, local churches and the Rusape Prison Chaplaincy, which provided devotions, guidance and counseling. Social workers led guardian and child counseling sessions, while the Program Coordinator and staff managed event planning, ensuring smooth execution and effective monitoring.

The Back-to-School events also served as valuable opportunities for data collection, allowing the national ministry to adjust age categories, track participation and strengthen ongoing communication. These initiatives reflected strong coordination and strategic planning, setting a model for future efforts and reinforcing the program’s mission of education, mentorship and holistic family support.
